    Vijetnasmki som nastanjuje rijeke I estuarije u Indiji te je široko rasprostranjen diljem jugoistočne Azije. Hrani se algama, vodenim biljkama, planktonom, insketima, rakovima, ribom te čak I voćem. Može narasto do 130 centimetara dužine I težiti 44 kilograma. Životni vijek ove vrste se proteže preko 20 godine. Gledajući na svjetskoj razini ova riba je jedna od najvažnijih vrsta slatkovodnog ribarstva. Vijetnam, Tajland I druge azijske zemlje uzgajaju ovu vrstu u intezivnim akvakulturnim postrojenjima sa Europskom Unijom kao primarnim izvoznim tržištem.
